this morning, thank you. joining us now is labor of secretary hilda solis. madame secretary, good morning. >> good morning. happy labor day. >> indeed. although a lot of people wish there were more jobs out there. unemployment numbers stuck in the nines, tens of millions of people who have stopped looking for work. any good news on the job front this morning? >> look back eight months and we have actually added about 90,000 private sector jobs each month. when the president took office, remember, we were losing well over 700,000 and 600,000 jobs. i would tell you the course and path we're taking is on target. the president today will talk about infrastructure projects that put construction workers, electricians, welders back to work, and engineers, folks that have been unemployed for a long time. that's something that we -- i believe will get bipartisan support on. >> but the problem is, with some of the growth we have seen, has not been in manufacturing jobs but has been in service sector jobs. the people who need the work the most are the people who have the least amount of education. w

smith with p-g-and-e joins us live by phone now to give us an update. good morning jeff. thank you jeff smith with pg & e. san bruno city manager connie jackson says the most immediate task, is trying to account for all the people who lived in the neighborhood. "the city organization is fully mobilized to assist residents. our primary concern at this point is identifying and locating all of the residents of the affected area." the city is urging people whose homes are in the fire area, to register by calling this number... 650-616- 7180. the city wants to account for as many people as possible, as the search for more victims begins today. again, the number to call is 650-616-7180. cbs five photo journalist don ford was able to get near the spot where the fire started. he says it was a chaotic scene. "power lines are all down. thee's glass and dirt in the street. close to the epicenter where this main ruptured, the the the energy was so intense that the street has been reduced to nothing but a dirt path now. it's still wide, but there s nothing left at all of the asphalt. bruno, bracket. >> thank you. >> simon perez joins from us bayhill shopping center a major gathering spot for the evacuees. >> reporter: good morning. you can see behind me the red cross truck is here. they are certainly helping many of those people who had their homes either completely burned to the ground or had a lot of damage done to it. you can see some of the video there. dozens of homes that burned and more that are damaged. one person confirmed dead and dozens hurt. many people taking themselves to the hospital. some with severe burns, others with smoke inhalation, some in nearby hospital, others as far as san francisco. saint francis burn unit was treating some of the people last night. this is going to be a pretty difficult search operation, certainly not rescue but a search operation as cadaver dogs go through some of the rubble this morning. mainly, that's because many of the people if there are any left inside pretty much would have been incinerated. this fire was so hot, i was here last night that it just eliminated the houses almost instantly. you see skeletons, chimne

that water had shown up in tests. the key to fighting this corrosion apparently using chemicals or robots to scrape microbes away but apparently pg&e says the pipeline in san bruno was too narrow and had too many bends for some of the recommended treatments. pg&e said it did use ultrasonic techniques to detect corrosion and didn't find any. meanwhile, the public utilities commission has voted to bring an independent panel in to investigation this explosion, looking into what pg&e and state agencies could have done to avoid the disaster. state leaders are pushing to make sure pg&e pays for the cost of the panel out of its own profits so customers do not have to foot the bill. right now, heavy demolition and clean-up are going on here at the site in the neighborhood leveled by that explosion. the 35 homes that were burned to the ground will be removed. that process started yesterday. large excavators and workers in protective gear are working on three homes a day. at the same time, street sweepers and water trucks work to keep the area clean by reducing the threat of toxic dust. >> want to

like that. frankly, that's some of the things that the ntsb will be looking at to give us some understanding of what more we could have done. >> reporter: that's talking about what they could have done after what could have been done before the big question. a 2009 pg&e document put a nearby section of the ruptured gas line pipeline 132 in the top 100 highest risk lines section of pg&e's pipelines. that section was actually 2.5 miles north of the blast site in south san francisco. the document said that the line was slated to be fixed in 2012 and that "the likelihood of a failure makes the risk of a failure at this location unacceptably high." when you look at what happened here, there's a lot of concern about other pipelines here in california and across the state. the public utilities commission has ordered pg&e to inspect all 6,000 of its lines here in california with a special concentration on those high pressure lines located in high density areas like here in san bruno. >> anne, i'm looking at a website pg&e has, what, 6,000 lines, 6500 miles of pipeline. it puts it in pe

of the country waking up to extreme weather, including us here in new york city. good morning, everyone. i'm maggie rodriguez. >> we got soaked around here yesterday. good morning, everybody. i'm harry smith. of course, in the midwest, there's still a lot of cleanup and a lot of water piled up all over the place there. and the big story then turns out to be in southern california. in california, a record-breaking heat wave making l.a. feel more like death valley. downtown los angeles yesterday, they armometers topped out at 1 degrees, all-time high. the l.a. department of water and power says it recorded its highest ever demand for ele electrici electricity. hattie kaufman reports. >> reporter: talk about scorching. los angeles topped out at 113 degrees, the hottest day in l.a. history. it edged out the previous record set in 1990 by one degree. >> i'm going to melt. >> quite frankly, you can feel your skin searing in the heat of it. >> reporter: a high pressure system trapped the heat which is not good news for firefighters battling several brush fires. >> the wind, the heat and the humid

joins us from oakland to explain what happened. anne. >> reporter: well, looks like she got caught in some sort of crossfire. the 6-year-old girl was sleeping in her bedroom according to police when she ended up getting hit with a bullet in her upper arm. she is going to be okay. but she is at the hospital. it happened at this house here behind me on the 1600 block of seminary avenue south of international boulevard in oakland. several rounds were fired at this home at around 2:15. police believe by the number of gunshots that were fired, there was likely more than one shooter involved. no one has been arrested, unfortunately, police believe this could be a gang-related incident and apparently according to the people who live here, there was a -- some sort of incident involving a shooting here about a month ago. the shooter is unknown. she is the 6-year-old girl will be okay. >>> federal investigators are looking into the possibility of a link between a power failure and this month's explosion and fire in san bruno. the electric outage in milpitas affected pg&e's natural gas pipeli
